Diet & Feeding Guide
The Blue Phantom Pleco is a peaceful algae grazer that thrives on a varied omnivorous diet including biofilm, plant matter, and meaty foods.
Feeding Habits
- Plant/Algal Matter: Algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and peas.
- Protein Foods: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and high-protein sinking pellets.
Feeding Tips:
- Feed after lights out—nocturnal activity increases feeding response.
- Use sinking foods to ensure access at substrate level.
- Feed 3–5 times weekly depending on tank mates and growth stage.
Aquarium Setup & Care
- Flow & Oxygen: Provide strong water current and high oxygen via powerheads or spray bars.
- Decor: Use smooth river rocks, caves, driftwood. Hiding places are essential.
- Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel substrate works best.
- Tank Size: Minimum 120 L (≈ 30 gal); ideally larger for adult specimens.
- Water Quality: Excellent filtration and weekly 25–30% water changes are crucial.
Behavior & Tank Mates
- Generally peaceful but shy—offer shaded areas to reduce stress.
- Best housed with peaceful community fish such as tetras, hatchetfish, or dwarf cichlids.
- Avoid housing with aggressive plecos or bottom-feeders that compete for space.
Breeding
L128 have not been widely bred in captivity but are believed to be cave spawners like other Hemiancistrus species. Males guard the clutch in confined rock crevices. Soft, warm water and increased current may help induce spawning behavior.
Summary
The L128 Blue Phantom Pleco is a visually striking species prized for its rich blue coloration and peaceful nature. With proper conditions—oxygen-rich water, good flow, stable warmth, and a balanced diet—it makes a rewarding addition to any well-maintained tropical aquarium.
